The 7 mistakes seamstresses make when selling on Instagram

Have you been posting on Instagram for months and the sales just aren’t coming in? It’s not your fault. It’s the platform.
Instagram is a fantastic tool for showcasing your work. But selling on Instagram as a craftsperson is much more complicated than it seems, and most seamstresses, crocheters, and knitters fall into the same traps over and over again without even realizing it.
Here are the most common ones.

1. Confusing followers with customers

Having 2,000 followers doesn’t mean having 2,000 potential customers. On Instagram, most people who follow you do so for inspiration, not with the intention of buying. They’re fans of your work, not active customers.
The problem is that many artisans invest countless hours in growing their accounts, believing that more followers equals more sales. But that’s not the case. A small account with a well-targeted audience sells more than a large account with scattered followers.

2. Not having a clear sales process

“DM me if you’re interested” is the sales process for most. And it’s a broken process.
Each sale requires a manual conversation: negotiating the price, explaining payment methods, providing bank transfer details, confirming the order—all via private message. That doesn’t scale. It’s exhausting. And many sales are lost because the process is too friction-intensive.
Today’s shoppers are used to clicking, paying, and receiving automatic confirmation. If the process is complicated, they leave.

3. Publishing without consistency or strategy

One day three posts in a row, then ten days with nothing. Instagram’s algorithm penalizes inconsistency, and your audience notices it too.
But even worse than inconsistency is posting without a strategy. Beautiful photos of your creations are fine, but if all your content is just product without context, without a story, without value for your followers, engagement drops, and with it, visibility.

4. Relying on the algorithm to get noticed

Instagram decides who sees your content. And lately, it’s decided that very few people see it: the average organic reach of a post doesn’t even reach 5% of your followers.
This means that if Instagram changes its algorithm tomorrow, or if your account has a problem, your sales will vanish instantly. It’s a business built on terrain you don’t control.

5. Not having visible prices

“Price by DM” drives away many buyers who simply don’t feel like asking. The invisible price generates distrust and drastically reduces inquiries.
If you’re afraid to set a price because you think it will scare people away, the problem isn’t the price: it’s that you haven’t yet found your ideal buyer, who is willing to pay what your work is worth.

6. Not having a presence outside of Instagram

Instagram doesn’t have a real search engine. If someone Googles “handmade fabric bag Spain,” they won’t find your Instagram profile. Sales only reach those who already know you, never new customers who are actively searching for what you do.
Without a presence on an SEO-optimized channel, your business is invisible to 90% of potential buyers.

7. Manage everything manually and alone

Responding to DMs, managing orders, tracking shipments, handling complaints, keeping the books… all by hand, all by you. It’s unsustainable.
The artisans who sell through Instagram end up burned out not because of a lack of sales, but because of the cost of managing each sale manually without any system behind it.

The solution isn't to improve your Instagram. It's to have a real store.

Instagram can still be your showcase, your way of displaying the process, of connecting with your community. But sales should go through a channel you control, with an automated process, your prices visible, a product page, a shopping cart, and automatic confirmation.
That’s the beauty of an online store. And you don’t need to build it from scratch or pay a developer.
